Testosterone Gel

Testosterone Gels

Testosterone gels are another widely accepted form of testosterone replacement used to treat adult males who have low or no testosterone. Testosterone gels are products applied topically, or to the skin, and are applied daily.

The testosterone in the gels is absorbed into the body through the skin. Gels provide continuous delivery of testosterone throughout the day. The recommended dose is 50 mg of testosterone gel applied topically once daily in the morning to dry skin on the shoulders and upper arms.

However, the suggested dosage for testosterone gels varies depending on the age, sex, and diagnosis of the individual patient. Dosage, strengths, or application instructions may be adjusted, according to the patient’s response and progress, to deliver amounts of testosterone that approximate normal concentrations seen in healthy men. The dose can be adjusted between a minimum of 50 mg of testosterone and a maximum of 100 mg of testosterone. Your treatment physician should test your blood before you start and throughout your testosterone replacement therapy.

It is unknown if testosterone gels are safe or effective in children younger than 18 years old, and gels are not meant for use in women. It is important to make sure that other people are not exposed to the testosterone gels. This typically occurs when skin-to-skin contact is made with the application site.

As testosterone gels can be inadvertently transferred to other people, the area of application should be limited to the area that can be covered by a short sleeve T-shirt. Patients should wash their hands with soap and water immediately after applying testosterone gels, and patients should cover the application site(s) with clothing (e.g., a T-shirt) after the gel has dried. Before situations in which direct skin-to-skin contact is anticipated, patients should wash the application site(s) thoroughly with soap and water to remove any testosterone residue.
